In early 2006, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the National Nuclear Security Administration announced plans to conduct a large conventional experiment known as Divine Strake at the Nevada Test Site. Congressman Matheson has questioned DTRA officials about the purpose of Divine Strake and its potential environmental effects.
The Divine Strake experiment was expected to detonate 700 tons of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil as part of a dual-use test at NTS in order to gather both conventional and nuclear effects data.
